What is Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is a major Hindu festival celebrated in the city of Puri, Odisha, India. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, who are worshipped as deities in the famous Jagannath Temple.

The festival usually takes place in the month of June or July and marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. Gundicha Temple is considered to be the maternal aunt's house of Lord Jagannath, and according to legend, the deities visit this temple for a nine-day sojourn.

The highlight of Rath Yatra is the procession of the deities on grand chariots, pulled by devotees through the streets of Puri. The chariots, known as Rathas, are large and intricately decorated structures made of wood. The main chariot is for Lord Jagannath and is called Nandighosa. Lord Balabhadra's chariot is named Taladhwaja, and Devi Subhadra's chariot is called Darpadalana. The chariots are built anew each year.

Devotees from all over the world gather in Puri to witness and participate in the Rath Yatra. The atmosphere is filled with joy, devotion, and spiritual fervor as people pull the chariots with ropes, singing devotional songs and chanting the names of the deities. It is believed that participating in the Rath Yatra and pulling the chariots brings great blessings and spiritual merit.

The procession covers a distance of about three kilometers from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. After a nine-day stay at the Gundicha Temple, the deities return to the Jagannath Temple in a similar grand procession called Bahuda Yatra. The return journey is equally celebrated with enthusiasm and devotion.

Rath Yatra is not only a religious festival but also a symbol of unity and inclusiveness as people from all walks of life, irrespective of caste, creed, or nationality, come together to participate in the festivities. It is considered one of the largest and most grandly celebrated chariot festivals in the world.

The significance of Rath Yatra lies in the belief that participating in the procession and having the darshan (sight) of the deities on the chariots can cleanse one's sins and bestow spiritual liberation. It is believed that even a glimpse of Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra is highly auspicious and can bring about a positive transformation in a person's life.
