Gundicha Temple #Puri

Gundicha Temple, also known as the Mausi Maa Temple, is a Hindu temple located in the city of Puri, Odisha, India. It is an important pilgrimage site and is closely associated with the annual Rath Yatra festival of Lord Jagannath.

The Gundicha Temple is situated about three kilometers away from the Jagannath Temple. It is believed to be the home of Lord Jagannath's maternal aunt, and hence it is also known as the "Mausi Maa Temple" (Aunt's Temple). According to Hindu mythology, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra visit this temple during the Rath Yatra festival.

During Rath Yatra, the deities are ceremoniously taken from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in a grand procession. This journey is symbolic of Lord Jagannath's annual visit to his aunt's house. The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for a period of nine days, known as the "Navakalevara."

The Navakalevara ritual, which occurs once every 12 or 19 years, involves replacing the old wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshan Chakra with new ones. The new idols are carved from specially identified neem trees. This elaborate ritual attracts a large number of devotees and is considered highly sacred.

The Gundicha Temple is an important part of the Rath Yatra festival. Devotees throng to the temple to seek blessings and have darshan (sight) of the deities during their stay. The atmosphere around the temple is filled with devotion, prayers, and various religious activities during this period.

The architecture of Gundicha Temple is similar to the Jagannath Temple, but it is smaller in size. It has a spacious courtyard and sanctum where the deities are placed during the festival. The temple complex also includes other shrines dedicated to different deities.

After the nine-day stay at the Gundicha Temple, the deities begin their return journey to the Jagannath Temple in a grand procession called Bahuda Yatra. Devotees participate in this procession with great enthusiasm and devotion, similar to the Rath Yatra.

Gundicha Temple holds immense religious significance for devotees of Lord Jagannath and is an integral part of the Rath Yatra festival. It is considered a sacred place where devotees can seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath and experience a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment.
